Newspaper Headlines: APC governors reject old naira notes deadline, to meet with Buhari

Reports on the scarcity of the new naira notes and the internal wranglings in the All Progressives Congress (APC) dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, said forces in the presidential villa were inciting Nigerians against the APC. Edwin Clark, an Ijaw leader, has asked Ifeanyi Okowa, governor of Delta, to apologise over his decision to serve as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the newspaper says.
The Nation says the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed banks to commence immediate over-the-counter payments of the new naira notes to customers. The newspaper reports that el-Rufai said President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to the victory of Bola Tinubu, candidate of the APC.
Daily Independent reports that southern and middle belt leaders have insisted that Peter Obi of the Labour Party is their preferred presidential candidate. The newspaper says three people were killed and 24 injured following the collapse of a shopping mall under construction in the federal capital territory (FCT).
Daily Trust says APC governors have rejected the February 10 deadline for the phase-out of the old naira notes. The newspaper reports that the leadership of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has asked the federal government to investigate the killing of herders in Nasarawa during an accidental airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

 

The Guardian says a coalition of civil society groups has protested the non-availability of the new naira notes at Marina, Lagos. The newspaper reports that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) said there would be no sit-at-home on election day.
