Newspaper Headlines: ASUU to decide on strike this Sunday

The comments of leading presidential candidates at a conference organised by the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Peter Obi, standard bearer of the Labour Party, have criticised the federal government over insecurity and economic woes. The newspaper reports that the national executive council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will meet on Sunday to take a decision on the ongoing strike.
Daily Trust reports that the Nigerian police and the Police Service Commission have clashed over recruitment of constables. The newspaper says the federal government has introduced the rotavirus vaccine to prevent children’s deaths from diarrhoea.
The Nation says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has backed the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) insistence on the payment of the withheld salaries of striking varsity lecturers. The newspaper reports that Ibrahim Shekarau, former Kano governor, has dumped the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The Guardian reports that Chimamanda Adichie, award-winning author, said Nigerians, especially young people, do not have enough leaders to inspire them. The newspaper says some stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are considering some south-west politicians to replace Iyorchia Ayu as the party’s national chairman.
The Daily Independent says the federal government has disclosed that the crisis of trapped funds of foreign airlines is being resolved. The newspaper reports that Lassa fever killed 158 people in 24 states in six months.
