Newspaper Headlines: CBN may print new naira notes abroad to ease cash scarcity

The position of the council of state on the redesigned naira notes dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) may award the printing of new naira notes to foreign contractors in the coming days in order to boost the circulation of the currency. The newspaper reports that Olusegun Agbaje, resident commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos state, has described the call for his resignation by Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as a waste of time.
The Nation says the council of state has asked the CBN to either push more of the redesigned naira notes into circulation or allow the old notes to continue to circulate as a means of easing the current hardship of Nigerians. The newspaper says the Northern Elders Forum said Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, cannot impose Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), on Nigerians.
THISDAY reports that a new opinion poll conducted by Bloomberg News has projected Peter Obi as the leading presidential candidate ahead of the candidates of the two major political parties. The newspaper says the PDP presidential campaign council for Rivers has accused Nyesom Wike, governor of the state, of allegedly masterminding a deadly attack on Abiye Sekibo, its director-general.
Daily Trust reports that Godwin Emefiele, governor of the CBN, said the apex bank does not have the capacity to print adequate new naira notes. The newspaper says Nigerians are eagerly waiting for the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari on the new naira notes, one week after he promised to take a crucial decision.
The Vanguard says some civil society organisations have asked Buhari to fire Abdulrasheed Bawa, chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for contempt.
