Newspaper Headlines: Chaos at banks, businesses suffer over scarcity of naira notes

Reports on the scarcity of the naira notes and comments by Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that residents of border communities in states including Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Adamawa, and Kwara have opted for the CFA franc following the scarcity of the new naira notes across the country. The newspaper says Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party said their presidential candidates would not step down for  Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

 

 

The Nation says el-Rufai said some elements in the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari were working against Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The newspaper reports that the scarcity of the new naira notes is causing hardships across the country.
Daily Trust says the division in the APC has widened over the candidacy of Tinubu. The newspaper reports that the Rivers state government has revoked the approval granted to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign council to use the Adokie Amasiaemeka stadium in Ikwerre LGA.
THISDAY reports that the federal government said President Muhammadu Buhari was focused on delivering free and fair polls. The newspaper says Atiku described Tinubu as a hypocrite over an attempt to extricate himself from the failures of the APC-led government.
The Guardian says service downtime experienced by consumers while using bank services has compounded the woes of scarcity of cash — both old and new notes. The newspaper reports that the federal government has dismissed the recent report by Transparency International (TI), which said the country dropped five places in the 2022 corruption perception index (CPI).
