Newspaper Headlines: Controversy trails Sylva’s alleged resignation ahead of Bayelsa guber

Reports on the alleged plot to an install interim government and the reversal of the suspension of some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the national working committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reversed the suspension of Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti, and Pius Anyim, former senate president. The newspaper says there were claims that Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum resources, had resigned his position as minister to pursue his ambition as governor of Bayelsa state.
Daily Trust reports that organised labour has warned the federal government against petrol subsidy removal. The newspaper says the Debt Management Office (DMO) has revealed that Nigeria’s debt profile stood at N46.25 trillion as of December.
The Nation reports that some legal practitioners said the plot for an interim government is unknown to the Nigerian constitution. The newspaper reports that the Lagos government said efforts to discredit the victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state, at the March 18 election will fail.
THISDAY reports that Olisa Agbakoba, former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said there is no constitutional provision for an interim government in Nigeria while dismissing the idea as “total hogwash”.
Daily Independent says the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) has invited Festus Keyamo, spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council, over a petition he filed requesting the probe of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The newspaper reports that Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for the alleged irregularities in the 2023 elections.
