Newspaper Headlines: Death toll from Owo attack rises to 40, 61 victims still hospitalised

The election of Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos, as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) dominated the cover pages of the Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that Tinubu will meet with APC governors regarding who will become his running mate. The newspaper says the death toll from the attack on St Francis Catholic church, Owo, Ondo has risen to 40.
The Nation reports that Tinubu called on APC members to work together to stop the Peoples Democratic Party from taking power in 2023. The newspaper says 48 candidates are jostling for the vacant stool of the Alaafin of Oyo.
The Nigerian Tribune says Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, may be named as the running mate of Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate. The newspaper says Access Bank is set to acquire a $37 million stake in Kenya’s Sidian Bank.
Daily Trust reports that Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano, has picked the presidential ticket of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The newspaper says the federal government earned N19.2 billion from gold and others in the second quarter of 2022.
The Guardian reports that Tinubu is closer to attaining his “lifelong ambition” to become the country’s president after securing the APC presidential ticket. The newspaper says Ondo state government and the Catholic church will build a memorial park for victims of the church attack.
