Newspaper Headlines: Endless biometric enrolment costs Nigeria N57bn in 13 years

Reports on the reduction in the price of diesel per litre, and the leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), permeate the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government has written to 31 governors, informing them of impending flooding in their states between April and November 2024. The newspaper says the federal government said it has concluded plans to take over all idle oil wells from operators holding on to them.
Daily Trust reports that Port Harcourt refinery is yet to take off as the deadline elapses. Dangote refinery said it has reduced the price of automotive gas oil (AGO), also known as diesel, to N1,000 per litre, the newspaper says.
The Guardian reports that Nigerians are not comfortable with frequent calls for biometric registration in the country. The newspaper says the leadership tussle in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is being intensified ahead of the party’s 98th national executive council (NEC) meeting.
THISDAY reports that Heineken Lokpobiri, minister of state for petroleum resources, said Nigeria lost $34 billion in the last two and a half years owing to the fall in production from the assets being divested by ExxonMobil to Seplat Energy — a transaction still awaiting approval by the federal government. The newspaper says the Kaduna state assembly has set up 13-member panel to probe Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of the state.
