Newspaper Headlines: Ex-presidents, former VPs get N13.8bn upkeep allowance in 2024 budget

Reports on the details of the 2024 budget, and updates from COP28 in Dubai, dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that President Bola Tinubu has earmarked N13,805,814,220 for the upkeep of former presidents, vice-presidents, heads of state, chiefs of general staff, retired heads of service and permanent secretaries in the 2024 budget. The newspaper says the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) have applauded the senate for asking President Bola Tinubu to withhold statutory funds from local government areas without elected councils.
The Nation reports that the camps of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, and governors are scheming for control of the party. The newspaper says the appeal court has affirmed the victory of Alex Otti, governor of Abia state, in the March 18 election.
THISDAY reports that President Bola Tinubu has expressed his government’s commitment to end gas flaring in Nigeria. The newspaper says Kenyan President William Ruto said Tinubu’s removal of petrol subsidy is what Africa needs for development.
Daily Trust reports that Nigeria’s foreign exchange volatility may linger for a while due to low crude oil production and limited foreign exchange inflows. The newspaper says Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has flagged off the payment of N6 billion gratuity and death benefits of over 5,000 pensioners in the state.
The Guardian reports that tenants are groaning under the rising cost of rent in major cities across the country. The newspaper says the senate committee on appropriation said the 2024 budget is in tune with the yearnings of Nigerians.
