Newspaper Headlines: Farmers kick as CBN stops anchor borrowers’ programme

The incessant fire incidents at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) offices across the country and its implications on the 2023 elections dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation reports that Usman Baba, inspector-general of police, has disclosed that suspected terrorists arrested in connection with the plan to attack the federal capital territory (FCT) will soon be prosecuted. The newspaper says arsonists have burnt 65,000 uncollected permanent voter cards (PVCs) at the INEC office in Abeokuta south LGA, Ogun state.
The Punch says the naira has rebounded by 20.8 per cent to 720/dollar at the parallel market. The newspaper reports that farmers have kicked against the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stop disbursing funds under the anchor borrowers programme which started in 2015.

The Guardian says the resurgence of arson on INEC offices has raised fears of a volatile electioneering season ahead of 2023 polls. The United Nations (UN) said the growth of terrorism is a major threat to international peace, the newspaper reports.
Vanguard reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have traded words on the alleged forfeiture of $460,000 by Bola Tinubu, APC’s presidential candidate, in the US over “drug trafficking”. The newspaper says aviation unions have threatened to shut airports nationwide over the concession plan of the federal government.
