Newspaper Headlines: FCT residents live in fear as insecurity worsens

One of the national dailies has revealed that over 8,000 Nigerians lost their lives to different forms of violence — political violence, demonstrations (rioting and protesting) – in 2023.

 

Punch says Godwin Emefiele, the embattled former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), faces fresh charges as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) intensifies its ongoing investigation into alleged fraudulent foreign exchange allocations under him. The paper reports that civil society organisations have demanded the probe of Betta Edu, the minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, over the N585 million scandal.

 

Daily Trust reports that members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) kicked as Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, suspended the party’s primary in the state. The newspaper says the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) rescued 470 victims of human trafficking in Katsina in 2023.
Tribune says over 8,119 people were killed in over 4,326 violent events in 2023. The newspaper reports that Yakubu Dogara, a former speaker, has advised President Bola Tinubu not to reduce himself to being just a mourner-in-chief, on the back of the recent killings in Plateau.
The Nation reports the EFCC as saying that it visited Dangote Group Headquarters with a search warrant for some vital documents on forex allocations to the company from 2014 to 2023. The newspaper reports that Beninois and Togolese universities, which were temporarily de-recognised by the Nigerian government, are at risk of losing about N7.5 billion after universities in the two countries were suspected of involvement in alleged certificate racketeering.
