Newspaper Headlines: Federal workers in 90 MDAs yet to receive January salaries

Reports on the state of the economy and the defeat suffered by the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that prominent Nigerians including President Bola Tinubu, have mourned the death of Herbert Wigwe, the group chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc, who died in a chopper crash in the United States on Friday. The newspaper says power distribution companies overbilled about 7.1 million unmetered electricity consumers between January and September 2023.
The Nation reports Tinubu as saying that the country’s military is capable of ending insecurity and terrorism. The newspaper says the 36 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) are eagerly awaiting the delivery of the 102,000 metric tons of grains promised by the federal government.
Daily Trust reports that federal civil servants in about 90 ministries, departments and agencies are yet to receive their January salaries. Abubakar Sa’ad III, the Sultan of Sokoto, said the best way to get out of the current hardship facing many Nigerians is to return to God in prayers.
The Guardian reports that oil firms exiting Nigeria polluted the Niger Delta with 36.1 million litres of crude oil in eight years. The newspaper says the World Health Organisation (WHO) has predicted a shortage of 10 million health workers by 2030.
