Newspaper Headlines: FG counters el-Rufai, marketers’ claims on payment of petrol subsidy

Reports on the national executive committee (NEC) meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the court order on the suspension of Abdullahi Ganduje, national chair of the All Progressives Congress (APC), suffuse the frontpages today. 

The Punch reports that the federal government said the various claims by different individuals and groups on the alleged return of petrol subsidy were wrong. The newspaper says President Bola Tinubu has promised harsh consequences for persons who threaten Nigeria’s sovereignty and security.
Daily Trust reports that major stakeholders in the PDP, including governors and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, will test their strength today as the party holds its NEC meeting. The newspaper says there is uncertainty over the conduct of the APC governorship primary election in Ondo after the court affirmed Ganduje’s suspension. 
The Guardian reports that paucity of funds has stalled the rehabilitation of the eastern corridor rail, three years after the inauguration of the project. The newspaper says the federal government has opposed the conditions listed by the counsel of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for the continuation of his trial.
THISDAY reports that Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has reiterated the apex bank’s stance of not intervening in the foreign exchange (FX) market, adding that the regulator remains firm in its commitment to fostering a market-driven exchange rate system. The newspaper says Tinubu has commended the management of Dangote Refinery for reducing the pump price of diesel.
