Newspaper Headlines: FG invites Nigerien leader for talks to douse tension

President Bola Tinubu’s New Year message permeates the frontpages today. 

The Punch reports that Tinubu, in his New Year message, promised Nigerians massive food production and reduction in the inflation rate to 15 percent. The federal government said it has initiated constructive dialogue with the leadership of Niger Republic in a bid to de-escalate the brewing diplomatic tension between both countries.
Daily Trust reports that Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi, has asked Tinubu to listen to Nigerians who are opposed to some aspects of the tax reform bills. The newspaper says the Nigerian military said its troops killed 10,937 terrorists and rescued 7,063 kidnap victims in 2024.
Vanguard reports Tinubu as saying that the federal government is planning on reducing the price of food items and promoting local manufacturing of drugs through the establishment of a National Credit Guarantee Company in the new year. The newspaper says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has insisted on the withdrawal of the tax reform bills to enable widespread consultations with stakeholders. 
Nigerian Tribune reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo has asked Tinubu to warn the state government over the suspension of LGA chairpersons. The governing council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has approved the appointment of Aisha Maikudi as the seventh substantive vice-chancellor (VC) of the institution.
The Guardian reports that members of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH) in Ondo state have commenced an indefinite strike over alleged poor conditions of service. The newspaper says Adebayo Adelabu, minister of power, has blamed vandalism for inability of the federal government to increase the country’s power generation in 2024.
