Newspaper Headlines: FG panel to reconvene on Monday over naira-for-crude crisis

The national dailies continue to reflect the divide over the emergency rule in Rivers state.

While the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has endorsed the president’s proclamation, opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Nasir el-Rufai reject it outright.

Punch reports that former vice-president Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and el-Rufai, former Kaduna governor, have announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. The newspaper says a federal government panel will reconvene on Monday over the naira-for-crude crisis involving Dangote refinery and the national oil company.
Tribune says the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has strongly accused Tinubu of using recent pipeline attacks as a pretext to unseat Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, and impose federal control over the oil-rich state. The newspaper reports that Olakunle Nafiu, the director general of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has announced that all corps members will receive their new monthly allowance of N77,000, effective March 2025.
Guardian reports that Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, said the federal government has freed 4,082 minor offenders to save N1 billion annually. The newspaper says Yusuf Tuggar, minister of foreign affairs, said delay in appointing Nigeria’s heads of missions abroad has not affected implementation of the country’s foreign policies.
Independent says the Kogi Central Women Development Association (KCWDA) has thrown its weight behind the movement for the recall of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, senator representing Kogi central, from the upper chamber. The newspaper reports that Tinubu has directed a thorough investigation into the tanker explosion that resulted in multiple accidents and loss of lives in Karu, Abuja, on Wednesday night.
