Newspaper Headlines: FG plans evacuation of Nigerians over growing tension in Middle East

Reports on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration and protests in some parts of the country permeate the frontpages. 

The Punch reports that the October 1 protests recorded low turnout nationwide. The newspaper reports that the federal government is planning an evacuation of Nigerians willing to leave the Middle East as tension escalates in the region over Israel’s hawkishness with Iran and Hezbollah.
Daily Trust reports that residents of Kano, Akwa Ibom, Plateau, Bayelsa, Adamawa and Taraba states shunned the October 1 protests. The newspaper says political leaders, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and governors, have expressed optimism that Nigeria will overcome its current challenges if they are tackled with a common purpose, zeal and love for one another.
Vanguard reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has delivered 48.6 million barrels of crude oil to Dangote Petroleum Refinery in the last 10 months. The newspaper says Emirates, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) flag carrier, has resumed operations to Nigeria.
The Guardian reports that protests in some parts of the country marred Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration. The newspaper says the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 35-day ultimatum to the federal government to address the lingering crisis threatening the public university system in Nigeria.
