Newspaper Headlines: FG plans to deploy 6m electricity meters before June 2023

The criticism trailing the endorsement of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), by former President Olusegun Obasanjo dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation says Obasanjo has been criticised for endorsing the candidacy of Obi. The newspaper reports that gunmen attacked a military checkpoint at Ubomiri/Nwaorieubi road in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo state.
The Punch reports that the camps of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have protested against Obasanjo’s endorsement of Obi. The newspaper says the federal government is planning the deployment of six million meters in the first and second quarters of this year to reduce the number of unmetered electricity consumers.
Daily Sun says the Akwa Ibom state government has raised the retirement age for teachers from 60 to 65 years. The newspaper says Peter Abang, a lawyer, has petitioned Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, over the commencement of the criminal inquiry, arrest, and prosecution of Yusuf Bichi, director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Daily Trust reports that Tinubu said the petrol subsidy only favours the rich more than the poor. The newspaper says there is uncertainty in the PDP ahead of the February 25 presidential election.
The Guardian says public criticisms are brewing against the national assembly over the failure of N12.850 billion investment in the business of constitution amendments since 2011. The newspaper reports that Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, said Nigerians are too sophisticated to be tricked by religion.
