Newspaper Headlines: FG seeks fresh $400m World Bank loan for cash transfer to households

Reports on the fresh loan request of $400 million by the federal government from the World Bank dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government has approached the World Bank for a $400m loan for the conditional cash transfer to 15 million households. The newspaper says the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has met with Lateef Fagbemi, attorney-general of the federation, over poor remuneration of judges at all levels.
The Nation reports that Mahmood Yakubu, national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said the results of the November 11 governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states would be transmitted according to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022. The newspaper says Muhammad Ali Pate, the coordinating minister of health and social welfare, said the federal government is considering engaging retired medical practitioners.
THISDAY reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has begun buying petrol via cash tenders, rather than oil swaps. The newspaper says stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have commenced consultations with members of the G5 group to get their support for the planned move to ensure Bukola Saraki becomes the party’s next national chairman.
The Guardian reports that stakeholders have urged President Bola Tinubu to address the challenge of hunger in the country. The newspaper says the Save Democracy Movement (SDM) has condemned Tinubu’s appointment of Ola Olukoyode as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Daily Trust says the recent suspension of the N-Power programme has caused great difficulties for young Nigerians who were relying on the scheme to combat unemployment. The newspaper reports that Iran has warned Israel to immediately halt its “war crimes” against Gaza or it could face “a huge earthquake” of resistance.
