Newspaper Headlines: FG, states, LGAs share N4.37trn in six months, says NEITI

Reports on the suspension of the Nigeria Air Project, and fear of coups in Africa, dominate the front pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the African Union’s Peace and Security Council has suspended Gabon following the overthrow of President Ondimba Ali Bongo by soldiers led by Brice Nguema, head of the Republican guards. The newspaper says the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) disclosed that the federal government, states, and LGAs shared N4.37 trillion from the federation account between January and June 2023.

 

The Nation reports that the federal government has suspended airport concessions and the Nigeria Air project. The newspaper says the federal government has announced plans to capture 15 million poor and vulnerable households in its social intervention programmes.
THISDAY reports that Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), is not the owner of the party and can be disciplined. The newspaper says the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has alerted banks and other financial institutions of the arrest of a Nigerian and four others over their alleged involvement in currency counterfeiting amounting to $1 billion.
Daily Independent says the Nigeria Labour Con­gress (NLC) has criticised the N5 billion allocations to each state by the federation as palliative over the removal of petrol subsidy. The newspaper reports that the federal government has threatened to go after politicians and other persons involved in the illegal mining of the country’s natural resources.

 

Daily Sun reports that Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last elections, has urged African leaders to address the causes of coups. The newspaper says Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of Delta, said he was not sacked as the governor of the state by the court of appeal.
