Newspaper Headlines: Fubara insists on LGA polls despite court order

Reports on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebration and the nationwide protest against hunger suffuse the frontpages today. 

President Bola Tinubu, in his Independence Day speech, said Nigeria must either reform for progress and prosperity or continue with business as usual and risk collapse, Punch reports. The newspaper says Darius Ishaku, former governor of Taraba, has been remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraud.
Vanguard reports that organisers of the October 1 nationwide protest have clashed with the police over the planned demonstration. The newspaper says the federal government has inaugurated a committee to probe allegations of gross misconduct against the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) by crossdresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
The Guardian reports that the economic hardship in the country has overshadowed Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration. The newspaper says Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, has insisted that Saturday’s LGA elections in the state will hold despite a court order halting the polls.
Daily Trust reports Tinubu as saying that his administration is committed to sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s problems.
