Newspaper Headlines: IMF, Cardoso, Edun pledge to scale up social spending in Nigeria

Reports on incessant killings and abductions in Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country permeate the frontpages.

The Punch reports that Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police, has deployed a special police squad to address the rising violence across the country. The newspaper says there are indications that Siminalayi Fubara, suspended governor of Rivers, is warming up to making concessions to ease the political tension in the state after meeting with President Bola Tinubu in the United Kingdom.
The Nation reports that Hyacinth Alia, governor of Benue, said individuals who attacked communities in Benue state are foreigners. The newspaper says Uba Sani, governor of Kaduna, has revoked institutional houses and plots of land sold by the administration of Nasir el-Rufai.
Daily Trust reports that Mahmuda, the new terrorist group, has intensified its attacks at various communities in Kwara and Niger states. The newspaper says the purported plan by the Kaduna government to sell the staff quarters and some land in Queen Amina College, is raising dust amid the overcrowding in the school.
Vanguard reports that Umar Bago, governor of Niger, has declared a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Minna following incessant killings and abductions. The newspaper says the leadership of the senate has tackled Tunde Bakare, the serving overseer of The Citadel Global Community Church, for describing the upper chamber as a “rubber stamp”.

 

ThisDay reports that Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA), has promised that the killings across the country will soon come to an end. The newspaper also reports that Olayemi Cardoso, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor; and Wale Edun, coordinating minister of the economy; said the federal government, alongside the International Monetary Fund (IMF), will scale up social spending across the country.
The IMF has projected higher inflation in Nigeria, The Guardian reports. The newspaper adds that the Plateau chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has advocated for self-defence against incessant killings in Benue and Plateau states.
