Newspaper Headlines: Government plans evacuation as flood hits 28 states

Reports on the directive for residents living in flood-prone areas across the country to relocate permeate the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers today.

The Punch reports that state governments and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have commenced evacuation of residents living in flood-prone areas. The newspaper says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to commence a mass procession today as Joe Ajaero, its president, honours an invitation from the police.

 

Daily Trust reports NEMA as saying that flood has killed 179 persons in 15 states and displaced 208,655 others in 22 states in 2024. The newspaper says the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced September 14 as the “final deadline” for the NIN-SIM linkage exercise.
Vanguard reports that the senate is set to subject the controversy on the pegging of 18 as the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions to public hearing. The newspaper says oil marketers have started pushing for a reduction in the pump price of diesel to N700 per litre to help improve the distribution of petroleum products across the country.
The Guardian reports that data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reveals that the amount of currency in circulation has surged to an unprecedented N4.05 trillion in July 2024. The newspaper says Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has asked Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP in 2023, to contest the presidency in 2031.
