Newspaper Headlines: Governors block LG chairpersons from opening CBN accounts

Reports on the crisis in the Labour Party (LP) and the protest organised by the Take It Back (TIB) movement on Monday permeate the frontpages of the dailies. 

The Punch reports that some state governors have warned their local government chairmen against opening accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the direct payment of allocations from the federation account. The newspaper says the leadership tussle in LP has taken a dramatic twist after the Julius Abure-led leadership announced a national executive committee meeting while the faction of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the party in 2023, announced a separate meeting for stakeholders.

The Nation reports that the federal government is exploring potential scenarios to mitigate the possible negative impact of the United States tariffs on the Nigerian economy. The joint action committee (JAC) of staff unions in Ondo state-owned tertiary institutions has given a 14-day ultimatum to Lucky Aiyedatiwa, governor of the state, to implement the national minimum wage for workers in the state’s higher institutions, the newspaper says.
