Newspaper Headlines: Gunmen kill 11 in Benue on Christmas Day

Reactions to the “accidental bombing” in Sokoto state, and the allegations against the federal government of Nigeria by the neighbouring Nigerien government, dominate the frontpages of the dailies.

The Punch reports that suspected herders killed 11 persons in Benue state on Christmas Day. The newspaper says the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) has released a new price list for transport fares to 12 states based on the 50 percent transport palliative provided by the federal government.

 

Daily Trust reports that Abdourahamane Tchiani, the Nigerien military leader, has accused President Bola Tinubu of conniving with France to destabilise Niger Republic. The newspaper says the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Joy Enwa, accountant-general of Delta state, over alleged N1.3 trillion fraud linked to Ifeanyi Okowa, former governor of the state.
Vanguard reports that the N2.7 trillion debt owned by power generation companies and the recurring grid collapses ruined the federal government’s plan for 6,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity. The newspaper says the federal government and 35 states have proposed N74 trillion as budget for poverty alleviation.
The Guardian reports that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has described the military air strike in Sokoto, that inadvertently killed innocents, as a gross violation of humanity. The newspaper says Nigeria has incurred over N199.1 billion electricity subsidy across eleven distribution companies (DisCos).
