Newspaper Headlines: Gunmen on killing spree, and FG warned against petrol subsidy

The advice of the presidential economic advisory council (PEAC) to President Muhammadu Buhari that petrol subsidy should be removed dominated the headlines of some Nigerian newspapers. Issues bordering on the rising insecurity, especially the attacks on police officers and their stations, also made the headlines.

The PUNCH reports that the economic advisory council has asked the president to remove subsidy on petrol. The newspaper’s cover picture shows a razed church auditorium belonging to the Redeemed Christain Church of God (RCCG) in Lagos.
The Nation reports that gunmen killed several policemen and 19 others in multiple attacks in Katsina, Anambra, Kaduna, and Akwa Ibom states on Sunday. The newspaper says there is bickering over whether the suspension of Hadiza Bala Usman, managing director of Nigerian Port Authority(NPA), followed due process.
Nigerian Tribune says 400 Nigerians were murdered by Boko Haram, bandits, and herdsmen in the first quarter of 2021. The newspaper reports that 28 persons died in a boat mishap in Niger state, while 65 were rescued and seven are missing.
Daily Independent also reports that the economic advisory council told Buhari that petrol subsidy payment worsens states’ solvency. The newspaper says the federal government loses N4.7 billion annually to illegal jet charter operators.
The Guardian reports that weak consumer protection keeps cement prices high in the country. About 127 civil society organisations (CSOs) have asked Buhari to stop the rising insecurity or resign, the newspaper says.
Daily Sun reports that some residents of Abuja suburbs have fled their houses over the fear of bandits’ attack. The newspaper says inadequate funding of critical sectors in the country is fuelling poverty and crimes.
