Newspaper Headlines: Hardship bites harder as north enters 8th day without electricity

Reports on the strike embarked upon by varsity workers, and the power outage in northern Nigeria, suffuse the frontpages. 

The Punch reports that the joint action committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has vowed to indefinitely shut down all activities in universities across the country from Monday, October 28, 2024. The newspaper says direct payment of statutory allocations to local government areas will commence in November 2024.
Daily Trust reports that residents of northern Nigeria have expressed concern over the power outage in the region in the past eight days. The newspaper says petrol consumption in the country has drastically reduced as many Nigerians are finding it difficult to purchase the product due to soaring cost.
Vanguard reports that the naira has depreciated to N1,740 in the parallel market. The newspaper says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticised the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for distancing itself from the federal government’s decision to remove subsidy on petrol. 
The Guardian reports that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has faulted the high cost of governance in the country. The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says it is moving towards phasing out wooden boats on inland waterways.
