Newspaper Headlines: Hike in petrol price renders N70,000 minimum wage useless, says NLC

Saturday’s governorship election in Edo dominates the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that there is heavy presence of soldiers on the borders between Edo, Kogi, Delta, Ondo and Anambra states ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Edo. The newspaper says calls to replace Umar Damagum as acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have deepened divisions within the party’s governors’ forum.
The Nation reports that Wale Edun, minister of finance, said the Nigerian economy is on the right path and that the federal government no longer depends on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to meet its financial obligations. The newspaper says President Bola Tinubu will not attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The Guardian reports that loyalists of Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, are expected to contest the LGA elections on the platform of the All Peoples Party (APP). The newspaper says the police have vowed to deal with persons planning to cause trouble during Saturday’s Edo governorship election.
Vanguard reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said the hike in petrol price has rendered the N70,000 minimum wage useless. The newspaper says the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has announced that water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon has been released into the Rivers Niger and Benue.
