Newspaper Headlines: INEC distributes sensitive election materials as candidates sign peace accord

Reports on the conduct of the upcoming presidential and national assembly elections dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

 

The Punch reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive election materials in some states ahead of Saturday’s elections. The newspaper says Abdulrasheed Bawa, the chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said some politicians have stockpiled the old naira notes to buy votes.

 

The Nation says the supreme court has fixed judgment for March 3 in the suit filed by 17 states to challenge the federal government on the naira redesign policy. The newspaper says President Muhammadu Buhari has asked candidates to accept the results of polls and avoid acrimony.

Daily Trust reports that the United States government has assured Nigerians that the forthcoming polls in the country matter to the world. The newspaper says the national security council has asked INEC to go ahead with the conduct of elections.

 

THISDAY reports that the chairperson of EFCC said over N500 billion of old naira notes are yet to be returned to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The newspaper says some governors are being probed by the police for allegedly inciting violence over the naira scarcity.

 

Daily Independent says the EFCC is set to deploy its operatives across the country against vote buyers in the forthcoming elections. The newspaper reports that Buhari asked candidates to respect the choice of voters in the election.
