Newspaper Headlines: Insurgents demand release of 16 commanders for Kaduna train hostages

The violent attacks in some communities in Plateau state and reports on the 2023 presidential election dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that groups loyal to Bola Tinubu, former governor of Lagos, and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo clashed over the presidential ambition of both politicians. The newspaper says the bandits who attacked the Kaduna-Abuja train are demanding the release of 16 commanders in government custody in exchange for the release of over 100 victims.
The Nation says Tinubu met with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to mobilise support for his presidential ambition. The newspaper says more than 80 victims of bandits’ attacks in seven communities in Kanam LGA, Plateau state have been buried.
Daily Independent reports that the federal government says over 5,000 debtors are currently owing 10 of its ministries, departments and agencies N5.2 trillion. The newspaper says gunmen enforcing sit-at-home in Enugu attacked a motor park, which led to the death of two people.
Daily Trust says Sa’ad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto, has warned that the country may not witness 2023 if the rising insecurity is not addressed. The newspaper says presidential aspirants in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have risen to 15.
The Nigerian Tribune says families of Kaduna train attack victims have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the federal government to secure the release of their loved ones. The newspaper says a pregnant woman and nine others have been killed in a fire incident at Nembe/bille jetty in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
