Newspaper Headlines: Jonathan may wade into PDP crisis ahead of 2023 polls

Reports on the preparations of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a probable presidential run-off dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

Saturday Punch says police have vowed to arrest and prosecute persons who vandalise campaign posters and billboards. The newspaper says the United States Department of Justice said it has transferred over $20.6 million linked to Sani Abacha, late head of state, to the federal government.
The Nation says INEC has revealed its plans for a run-off in the 2023 presidential election if the first ballot did not produce a winner. The newspaper reports that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to allow commercial banks to control dollar buy-sale rates.
Daily Trust reports that ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities, hard times await travellers over the skyrocketing airfares and the depleting flight options. The newspaper says the court has discharged and acquitted Babachir Lawal, a former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF) and five others of the N544 million grass-cutting contract scandal.
THISDAY says INEC is planning to print an extra 93.5 million ballot papers in preparation for a probable presidential election runoff. The newspaper reports that the IMF has predicted that Nigeria’s fiscal deficit may widen to 6.2 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022 as a result of the payment of fuel subsidies.
Saturday Sun says Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has reached out to former President Goodluck Jonathan to act as a mediator between him and the aggrieved PDP governors. The newspaper reports that Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), said the cost of governance and corruption at an unacceptable level in Nigeria.
