Newspaper Headlines: Kano, Anambra, Benue mull death sentence for convicted kidnappers

Reports on the curfew imposed on Mangu LGA of Plateau state, and the bilateral talks between the federal government and the United States, permeate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that at least 10 states have vowed to implement the death sentence and life imprisonment penalty for convicted kidnappers amid the growing concern over the rising abduction epidemic in the country. The newspaper says the federal government through the Bureau of Public Enterprises is currently carrying out transactions for the sale of five power plants under the National Integrated Power Projects at a cost of about $1.15 billion.

The Nation reports that the federation account allocation committee (FAAC) said it shared N1.12 trillion with the three tiers of government in December 2023. The newspaper says Gabriel Dewan Kudangbena, speaker of the Plateau house of assembly, insisted he would not recognise the 16 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who were declared winners of the election by the appeal court.

The newspaper says patients have been groaning amid the ongoing strike embarked upon by workers of the primary healthcare centres in the six area councils of the federal capital territory (FCT).
THISDAY reports that Antony Blinken, United States secretary of state, has lauded some of the bold economic reforms taken by President Bola Tinubu since he assumed office on May 29, 2023. The newspaper says Ali Ndume, chief whip of the senate, said there will be political consequences if the federal government insists on moving some departments of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) headquarters to Abuja.
The Guardian reports that Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau, has declared a 24-hour curfew in Mangu LGA over violence. The newspaper says the Ogun state house of assembly has impeached Olakunle Oluomo as the speaker of the assembly.
