Newspaper Headlines: Labour fumes as FG stops N35k wage award payment

Reports on the defection of 27 members of the Rivers house of assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC), dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said it would write the Independent National Election (INEC) to demand fresh elections to replace its 27 members in the Rivers state house of assembly who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The newspaper says organised labour and the federal government are on a collision course over the government’s failure to sustain the payment of N35,000 wage award to workers.
The Guardian reports that many households are finding it difficult to purchase daily and basic needs amid rising inflation. The newspaper says the national grid has experienced another system collapse, throwing the country into darkness.
THISDAY reports that President Bola Tinubu said he is not satisfied with the current state of security in the country. Wale Edun, minister of finance and coordinating minister of economy, said the federal government will increase the 2024 budget if the county’s revenue improves next year, the newspaper says. 
Daily Trust reports that Super Eagles and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, and Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala have won the 2023 CAF Awards for best male and female footballers, respectively. The newspaper says Tinubu has warned the army that accidental bombing of civilians must never happen again.
Daily Independent says the alarming rate of job losses in the country may be threatening the ever growing success of the contributory pension scheme (CPS). The newspaper reports that the federal government has no plan to increase the tax rate.
