Newspaper Headlines: Labour hits governors over non-passage of LG autonomy bill

Reports on the exchange of old naira notes for the redesigned ones ahead of the January 31 deadline dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says bank customers have started rushing to banks across the country to exchange their old notes for new ones ahead of the January 31 deadline. The newspaper reports that the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has criticised governors over the failure of state houses of assembly to pass the local government autonomy bill in the ongoing constitution amendment exercise.

 

The Nation says the national assembly has asked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to grant a six-month extension and allow the redesigned notes to remain legal tenders alongside the old notes. The newspaper reports that the Police Service Commission (PSC), has asked retiring senior police officers to proceed with retirement.

 

Daily Trust reports that President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to lead a 14-member steering committee to enforce petroleum products supply and compliance with official prices. The newspaper says the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said banks collected N370.7 billion as stamp duty between 2016 and 2022.

Daily Independent says CBN has ruled out extending the deadline for the old naira notes. The newspaper says Buhari has forwarded the name of Solomon Arase, a former inspector-general of police, to the senate for confirmation as the chairman of PSC.

 

The Guardian reports that the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), warned Nigerians to prepare for earlier than the normal onset of rainfall in most parts of the country. The newspaper says the federal government has partially restored mandatory guidelines for travellers coming into the country.
