Newspaper Headlines: Labour kicks as 20 states deny workers wage award

Reports on the $2.25 billion loan obtained from the World Bank by the federal government dominate the front pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The PUNCH reports that Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest person, said he is planning to increase the storage capacity of his refinery to 5.3 billion litres. The newspaper says the supreme court has reserved judgment in the suit seeking full autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local governments.
Daily Trust reports that Mohammed Umaru Bago, governor of Niger; his deputy, Yakubu Garba; and Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, speaker of the state assembly, have all travelled to Saudi Arabia for hajj. The newspaper says the World Bank said there is a possibility that monetary policy tightening by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would not control inflation.
The Nation reports that the World Bank has approved $2.25 billion financial packages to support President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy. The newspaper reports that Aminu Muazu-Maifata, chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), said LGA chairpersons cannot afford to pay the N62,000 minimum wage offer proposed by the federal government.

The Guardian reports that the poor culture of blood donation in Nigeria has made many people who are desperate for blood transfusion to resort to the risky black market. The newspaper says the police command in Kano has banned all durbar activities in the state during the Eid-El-Kabir celebration.
