Newspaper Headlines: Landowners sue FG over Lagos-Calabar highway project

Reports on the swearing-in of Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the next chief justice of Nigeria (CJN) today dominate the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government has insisted that it would continue construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar coastal highway despite ongoing court cases filed by aggrieved persons. The newspaper says Tanko Sununu, minister of state for education, has written to the ministry of finance over the withheld salaries of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU); and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (NASU) and allied institutions.
Daily Trust reports that villagers at Sabon Birnin Daji in Igabi LGA of Kaduna have accused soldiers of killing three persons and over 100 cows at a weekly cattle market. The newspaper says the Sokoto police command has confirmed the imposition of a curfew at Sabon Birni town in Sabon Birni LGA of Sokoto state, after youths went on a rampage over the killing of Isa Muhammad Bawa, district head of Gatawa.

The Guardian reports that President Bola Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria to swear in Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the chief justice of Nigeria on Friday. The newspaper says an Ikeja chief magistrate’s court has discharged and acquitted six persons arrested during the 2020 #EndSARS protest.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the federal government has ordered security agencies to track foreign miners funding banditry, following the killing of 12 miners in Niger state. The newspaper says Oando Plc has completed the acquisition of a 100 percent shareholding interest in the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) from Eni, an Italian oil major.
