Newspaper Headlines: Like Kano, siege on traditional institution rages in Sokoto

Reports on the controversy trailing the negotiation of a new minimum wage dominate the front pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The PUNCH reports that organised labour has rejected the proposal of the southern governors’ forum to decentralise minimum wage negotiations to state governments. The newspaper said the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has procured advanced tactical equipment to enhance its tracking capabilities.
Daily Trust reports that the decision of the national assembly to extend the implementation of the capital components of the 2023 main and supplementary budgets to December 31, 2024, is raising questions. The newspaper says automated teller machines (ATMs) of commercial banks have become virtually redundant as point of sale (PoS) operators have taken over the market.
The Guardian’s cover story focuses on the politicisation of Nigerian traditional institutions using the events in Kano and Sokoto as case studies. The newspaper says the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that governors cannot dictate what to pay as minimum wage.
THISDAY reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed banks to deposit their excess foreign currency in its Lagos and Abuja branches. The newspaper says there are mounting calls for US President Joe Biden to quit the presidential race after his feeble performance in Thursday’s presidential debate with Donald Trump, his predecessor.
