Newspaper Headlines: Meranda may resign as Lagos speaker as Akande panel shortlists replacements

Reports on the crises in Osun and the Lagos house of assembly dominate the frontpages. 

The Punch reports that Mojisola Meranda, speaker of the Lagos house of assembly, may be asked to step down as part of the recommendations of the Bisi Akande panel. The newspaper says the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Nasir el-Rufai over his comments against President Bola Tinubu and Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA).
Daily Trust reports that stakeholders, including the Association of Capital Market Academics of Nigeria (ACMAN), Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, and the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), have rejected the incremental increase in the value-added tax (VAT) as proposed in the tax reform bills. The newspaper says the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has withdrawn its initial announcement of 4 percent free on board (FOB) import charges.
The Nation reports that funding and planning challenges are hindering the desire of the federal government to conduct another population census. The newspaper says there is confusion among local government workers in Osun state over the conflicting directives on work resumption — amid controversy over the leadership of the councils.
THISDAY reports el-Rufai as saying that it was Tinubu who specifically rejected him as a minister and not the national assembly. The newspaper says oil marketers under the aegis of the depot chairmen forum (DCF) of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) have threatened to embark on a strike if the N100 billion debt on bridging claims is not paid by the federal government.
