Newspaper Headlines: N’assembly asks appeal court to retain section 84(12) of Electoral Act

Reports on the 2023 general election, including the security concerns raised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation reports that the national assembly asked the court of appeal to retain section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act of 2022. The newspaper says state governments have asked the federal government to refrain from deducting $418 million Paris Club debt from their allocation.
The Punch reports that more than 1,149 persons, including employees of INEC and security officers have been killed during three elections held in 2011, 2015 and 2019. The newspaper says Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, has returned to Nigeria amid death rumour.
Nigerian Tribune reports that Afe Babalola, founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to suspend 2023 elections and set up a six-month interim government that will create a new constitution for Nigeria. The newspaper says the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has endorsed Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, for a second term in office.
Daily Trust reports that at least 53 commissioners and other aides of state governors have resigned in a bid to comply with section 84(12) of the Electoral Act of 2022. The newspaper says fighters of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked a security checkpoint in Maiduguri, Borno.
The Guardian reports that investors want more slice of N13.76 trillion pension assets. The newspaper says a notorious terrorist in Zamfara known as Nasanda has given the state government 14 days to pay him N30 million as compensation for the alleged killing of his wife and two other relations.
