Newspaper Headlines: N’assembly may pass 2024 budget on Saturday

Reports on the peace agreement signed by Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory, and Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers, dominate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the national assembly may pass the 2024 budget of N27.5tn on Saturday as about 541 ministries, departments, and agencies have concluded their defence. The newspaper says Pope Francis has formally permitted Catholic priests to bless same-sex unions.
The Guardian reports that Nigerians spend about N1.5 trillion on cooking gas yearly — an amount that may be exceeded next year on account of rising price of the product. The newspaper says Wike and Fubara have signed a peace agreement after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
The Nation reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said rerun and by-elections to fill existing vacancies in the national and state assemblies will hold in the first week of February 2024. The newspaper says Tinubu has inaugurated the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.
Daily Trust reports that Yusuf Sununu, minister of state for education, said the number of out-of-school children in northern Nigeria is a time bomb that must be addressed. The newspaper says the supreme court has fixed Thursday, December 21, to hear the appeal filed by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) seeking to affirm its candidate, Abba Yusuf, as governor of Kano.
THISDAY reports that Tinubu has promised that his administration will uphold the freedom of the media as well as respect divergent views. The newspaper says as part of the peace agreement signed by Wike and Fubara, all court cases are expected to be withdrawn.
