Newspaper Headlines: Nigeria leads in yam production — but exports none, says FG

Reports on vote buying and the cash withdrawal limit policy dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has vowed that anyone caught buying or selling permanent voter cards (PVCs) would be arrested and prosecuted. The newspaper reports that the federal government said Nigeria is nowhere on the map of countries that export yam despite being a leading producer of the crop.
The Nation reports that the federal government has asked banks holding majority stakes in six electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to sell off their shares. The newspaper says Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has promised to end banditry and terrorism in the north-west.
Daily Trust says politicians have started making plans to bypass the new cash withdrawal limit policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The newspaper reports that the collection of PVCs in the south-east commenced at a slow pace amid rising insecurity.
THISDAY reports that Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, said he would have won the May 28 presidential
primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if the process had not been manipulated. The newspaper says President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the target of generating 30 gigawatts of electricity by 2030.
Daily Independent says the senate has considered a bill seeking to empower itself to ratify the decision of a president to sack the chairperson of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The newspaper reports that a duly authorised committee led by Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, is working to reconcile and recover all stamp duties.
