Newspaper Headlines: Afenifere, Ohanaeze say Nigeria’s future bleak without restructuring

Reports on the probe of Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and the November governorship elections in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa states dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government said President Bola Tinubu is open to working with the major contenders in the February 25 presidential election. The newspaper says the court has okayed the prosecution of Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the suspended resident electoral commissioner of Adamawa.
Daily Trust reports that some security agents deployed to conflict-ridden communities to maintain law and order between farmers and herders engaged in unprofessional conduct. The newspaper says Mohammed Malagi, minister of information and national orientation, said Tinubu’s tough reforms are necessary for rebuilding Nigeria.
The Nation reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced investigation of Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), over alleged $15 billion foreign debt. The newspaper says the Ondo house of assembly is divided over the impeachment process of Lucky Aiyedatiwa, deputy governor.
Daily Independent says parents have asked the federal government to scrap the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or review the scheme. The newspaper reports that Muhammad Datijo, a former justice of the supreme court, said it portends great danger for the country’s democracy to have the south-east and north-central regions not represented on the bench of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The Guardian reports that Tinubu has asked security operatives not to interfere in the November governorship elections in Imo, Kogi, and Bayelsa states. The newspaper says Buba Marwa, chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), said the agency will deploy personnel to 774 LGAs in 2024.
