Newspaper Headlines: NLC rejects 35% pay rise, insists on living wage

Reports on petrol scarcity, rising cost of food items, and other issues affecting workers, permeate the frontpages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that organised labour has expressed concern over soaring food prices and petrol scarcity in the country. The newspaper says the federal government has announced that it is set to issue a fully valid operating licence to Dangote Petroleum Refinery.
Daily Trust reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the salary increase for federal civil servants. The newspaper says the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has threatened to withdraw its services over non-payment of N200 billion bridging claims by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to its members, since 2022.
The Guardian reports that inflation and naira depreciation have reduced the value of workers’ salaries in Nigeria. The newspaper says Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, has faulted the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.
Vanguard reports that eight vessels have discharged over 300 million litres of petrol at Apapa and other ports. The newspaper says Tajudeen Abass, speaker of the house of representatives, says Nigeria’s value-added tax (VAT) is the lowest in Africa.
