Newspaper Headlines: Marketers warn of possible petrol price hike as scarcity lingers

Reports of petrol scarcity in some parts of the country dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says opposition parties have advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to succumb to forces pushing against the deployment of the biometric voter accreditation system and electronic transmission of results. The newspaper reports that the federal high court in Lagos has stopped the establishment of the proposed national carrier – Nigeria Air — and adjourned the case till February 13, 2023.
The Nation says petrol marketers have disagreed with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NPPCL) on the lingering petrol scarcity in Lagos and Abuja. Ademola Adeleke, the Osun governor-elect, has vowed to sack the permanent secretaries recently appointed by Gboyega Oyetola, outgoing governor of the state, the newspaper reports.
Daily Trust says information and communication technology (ICT) and agriculture are among the key sectors that boosted Nigeria’s gross domestic product (GDP) by 2.25 percent in the third quarter of 2022.
The Guardian says rising inflation and poor oil production in the last three months have undermined Nigeria’s economy. The newspaper reports that farmers have warned Nigeria to prepare for the high cost of food, owing to the destruction of farmlands by flood.
Daily Sun reports that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) said it has not endorsed any candidate for the 2023 elections. The newspaper says the northern Christians group led by Babachir Lawal, a former secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), has endorsed the candidacy of Peter Obi, flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP).
