Newspaper Headlines: Northern ministers get marching orders to defend Tinubu as opposition grows

Reports on political realignment by politicians ahead of the 2027 elections suffuse the frontpages of the dailies. 

The Punch reports that northern ministers in President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet have been given marching orders to defend the president against growing criticism from opposition figures. The newspaper says there is a crack in Tinubu’s political dynasty in Lagos following the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as speaker of the state house of assembly.
THISDAY reports that Emmanuel Ogalla, the chief of naval staff, said the Nigerian military has no excuse not to defeat terrorism, banditry, oil theft, kidnapping, secessionist agitations, and other emerging security threats. The newspaper says Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, and Rauf Aregbesola, former minister of interior, met in Lagos to strategise ahead of the 2027 election.
Vanguard reports that Bode George, a chieftain of the PDP, said former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), must unite to prevent the party from losing all seats in 2027. The newspaper says Benjamin Okoli, a 40-year-old Nigerian citizen, has died in the custody of the South African police.
Nigerian Tribune reports that Adewole Adebayo, presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 elections, said Nigeria does not need new political parties to oust the APC in 2027. The newspaper says Kosisochukwu Okafor, a 37-year-old man, has been arrested by the Anambra police command for allegedly killing his brother, Emmanuel Okafor, following an argument over food.
