Newspaper Headlines: Nigerians lament as Canada suspends Abuja high commission operations

Reports on the face-off between the labour unions and the Imo state government, dominate the front pages of the newspapers.

The Punch reports that a peace meeting organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo state ended in confusion on Tuesday after Kenneth Ukeagu, INEC national commissioner representing the south-east, ordered journalists to turn off their cameras and other gadgets. The newspaper says Nigerians are lamenting over the decision of the Canadian high commission in Abuja to suspend its operations following a fire outbreak.
Daily Trust reports that killings and violent attacks are on the rise in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states ahead of Saturday’s governorship elections. The newspaper says Nigerians have continued to experience scarcity of cooking gas amid hike in the price of the product.
THISDAY reports that Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said votes from polling units where violence is recorded, would not be counted by the commission in Saturday’s governorship elections. The newspaper says the labour unions have commenced an indefinite strike in Imo state.
The Guardian reports that at least 31 governors are yet to concede financial autonomy to the legislative arm of government in their states. The newspaper says the Lagos state house of assembly has resolved to invite Tolani Akibu, commissioner for tertiary education; Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, vice chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU); and the senate of the institution, over allegations of extortion and certificate racketeering levelled against the school.
