Newspaper Headlines: Obi, Otti’s LP caretaker panel drags Abure before supreme court

Reports on the hike in petrol price, tax reform bills, and the tanker explosion in Niger state are the major issues on the frontpages today.

The Punch reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described the recent hike in the price of petrol as the height of insensitivity against the masses. The newspaper says the 29-member caretaker committee set up by Alex Otti, governor of Abia, said it will drag Julius Abure, national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), to the supreme court over the leadership dispute in the party.
Daily Trust reports that Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, two former presidents, are set to testify in the $2.3 billion arbitration proceedings filed against Nigeria by Sunrise Power at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Paris, France, over an alleged breach of contract by the federal government. The newspaper says over 86 people have lost their lives in a tanker explosion that occurred in Gurara LGA of Niger state.
Vanguard reports that high interest rate has forced many manufacturers in Nigeria to run away from bank loans. The newspaper says the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Donald Trump, the incoming president of the United States of America, to identify US-based proceeds of corruption traced to former and current Nigerian public officials and their associates and to ensure the full recovery and return of any such stolen assets to Nigeria.
Nigerian Tribune reports that mixed reactions have trailed governors’ proposal on the tax reform bills, especially as it pertains to the value-added tax (VAT) sharing formula. The newspaper says the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have directed deposit money banks and mobile network operators to settle the long standing N250 billion USSD debt dispute.
