Newspaper Headlines: Ondo lawmakers may declare Aiyedatiwa acting governor today

Reports on the 2024 budget, remarks of the chief justice of Nigeria, and the political drama in Ondo, suffuse the front pages of Nigerian newspapers today.

The Punch reports that President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday present the 2024 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the national assembly. The newspaper says members of the Ondo house of assembly will meet today to discuss the political situation in the state.
The Nation reports that the peace deal brokered by Tinubu on the political scenario in Ondo state has been threatened by misinterpretation of terms by members of the Ondo house of assembly. The newspaper says Philip Shaibu, Edo deputy governor, said he is being intimidated over his decision to contest the 2024 governorship election in the state.
THISDAY reports that the federal executive council (FEC) has approved the N27 trillion proposed for the 2024 budget. The newspaper says Olukayode Ariwoola, chief justice of Nigeria (CJN), said unnecessary cases are overstretching the judiciary.
Daily Trust reports that Ariwoola said the judiciary is determined not to be overwhelmed by the sentiments of the “mob” in their decision making. The newspaper reports that 36 states, including the FCT and 774 LGs, received a total of N8.8 trillion as allocation from the federal account allocation committee (FAAC) from 2020 to 2021.
The Guardian reports that the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has bemoaned shortage of teachers in public schools, noting that the COVID-19 pandemic reduced tutors by 29 percent. The newspaper says despite warnings by police authorities, residents of Kano state took to the streets to denounce the recent judgment of the court of appeal sacking Abba Yusuf, governor of the state.
