Newspaper Headlines: Opposition parties tackle DSS, police over threat to protesters

Reports on the death of Ifeanyi Ubah and the return of petrol queues in some parts of the country dominate the front pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that opposition parties have kicked against the conditions stipulated by Kayode Egbetokun, inspector-general of police, for the planned nationwide protest in August. The newspaper says airline operators have rejected a proposed increase in the levy charged by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
THISDAY reports that Vice-President Kashim Shettima has appealed to youths to shelve the planned protest. The newspaper says Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied allegations of reselling shipments of crude oil.
Vanguard reports that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has directed its officers to intensify surveillance at the country’s borders ahead of the planned nationwide protest. The newspaper says Ifeanyi Ubah, senator representing Anambra south senatorial district, has died in London, United Kingdom.
The Nation reports that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), and other groups have pulled out from the planned protest. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it is ready for the Edo governorship election slated for September 21, 2024.
