Newspaper Headlines: Over 120 people killed since Tinubu’s inauguration, says Amnesty

The election of presiding officers of the 10th national assembly, dominate the front pages of Nigerian newspapers today.

THISDAY reports that Amnesty International said more than 120 people had so far been killed since President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023. The newspaper says no fewer than 100 persons, including a father and his four children, have reportedly lost their lives in a boat mishap at Egbu village in Patigi LGA of Kwara state.
The Guardian reports that Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) succeeded in getting their anointed candidates elected to lead the national assembly, raising concerns about the independence of the legislature. The newspaper says former US President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty at a Miami federal courthouse to 37 federal felony counts related to his alleged refusal to hand over classified documents.
The Punch reports that the Guinness World Records (GWR) on Tuesday confirmed Hilda Baci as the new record holder for the longest cooking time by an individual. The newspaper says Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, has notified the state assembly that he had handed over to Lucky Aiyedatiwa, deputy governor, to act as governor while he is away on 21-day medical leave.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has denied claims that it gave a license to Dangote refinery to import petrol, pending the completion of his refinery. The newspaper says Mahmood Yakubu, chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has been subpoenaed to appear before the presidential election petition tribunal to testify in the petition by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The Nation reports that Nigeria’s financial markets roused to a new start yesterday as investors and dealers shrugged off the weekend’s suspension and arrest of Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The newspaper says Tinubu has told the national assembly presiding officers that it is time to work for Nigerians.
