Newspaper Headlines: PDP governors lose as Wike seizes control of Rivers working committee

Reports on the September 21 Edo governorship election, and the flood in Maiduguri, suffuse the frontpages.

The Punch reports that the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) not to sign the peace accord for the Edo governorship election has sparked reactions and concern in the state. The newspaper says the national working committee (NWC) of the PDP has endorsed the Rivers state congresses which solidified the control of Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).
Daily Trust reports that Goni Ba Usman, a survivor of the Maiduguri flood, said his wife and five children are still missing. The newspaper says 400 Nigerians who were deported from the United Arab Emirates have arrived in Nigeria.
The Nation reports that governors have promised to support victims of the devastating flood in Maiduguri, Borno state. The newspaper says the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has invited Jibril Falgore, speaker of the Kano house of assembly; and Muhammad Butu, his deputy; for questioning as part of the ongoing probe of the N440 million drugs contract in 44 LGAs in the state.
Vanguard reports that uncertainty around pricing has pitched the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) against that of Dangote Refinery. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said 48 million Nigerians still practice open defecation, the newspaper says.
The Guardian reports that the federal government disbursed N171 million for the rehabilitation of Alau dam in Borno state between June 2023 and July 2024. The newspaper says protesters in Edo state have demanded the release of detained members of the PDP arrested by the police.
