Newspaper Headlines: Police tighten security in Kano over planned protests

After a prolonged political crisis in Ondo, President Bola Tinubu waded in on Friday. This and more suffuse the front pages of newspapers today. 

Punch says that the police have vowed a crackdown as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) prepare for protests in Kano. The newspaper reports that Yemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said Godwin Emefiele, his predecessor, pumped N10 trillion into the economy through quasi-fiscal activities.
Tribune reports that Matthew Kukah, the archbishop of Sokoto diocese, expressed his frustration regarding judges and clerics “stuck in politics”. The newspaper says Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police (IGP), said there is a shortage of manpower in the police force.
Daily Trust says Femi Gbajabiamila, the chief of staff to the president, said application for the student loan will be done online, adding that there will be no interface between the loan administrators and the beneficiaries. The newspaper reports that the Nigerian navy has deployed 4,000 personnel, 13 warships, 88 boats and two helicopters ahead of the chief of naval staff 2023 sea inspection exercise.
Guardian reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved yearly recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). The newspaper says the president and other critical stakeholders in APC have agreed to invoke the principle of necessity to stop the five-month political crisis in Ondo.
The Nation says the federal government is set to review the $100,000 bribery charge against Olasupo Shasore, a former attorney-general of Lagos. The newspaper reports that Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), has accused Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers, of seeking to destroy the structure that produced him as governor within three months of his inauguration.
